Committing to a Creative Life

What is a creative life? I would argue, each life is expressing creativity in some form at each moment, with their words, their gestures, their clothing choices etc. However, not everyone is consciously creating.

Humans, especially women, are divinely connected to source universe (or whatever you like to call the energy that is driving the formation of everything in our universe) through our ability to create. The key is to harness that power and bring new things into this world with intentionality.

By acting on the pull to make something, whether that be a cookie, a painting, or a block tower with your children you tap into this lifeforce energy surrounding literally everything. Rick Rubin say’s it beautifully in his masterpiece “The Creative Act”,

“Think of the universe as an eternal creative unfolding.

Trees blossom.

Cells replicate.

Rivers forge new tributaries.

The world pulses with productive energy, and everything that exists on this planet is driven by that energy.

Every manifestation of this unfolding is doing its own work on behalf of the universe, each in its won way, true to is own creative impulse.

Just as trees grow flowers and fruits, humanity creates works of art.”

You might be thinking, “Sure, ok but… (insert excuse.)” Time, money, ideas, freedom. Whatever! Trust me I have these excuses too, and I get it, they are real. Time and money can be hard to come by especially today. But I am here to argue, that DESPITE all the life things trying to get in the way of you are your creation, create anyway. In fact, create IN SPITE OF it all as an act of rebellion against all of the “societal stuff” that has formed our daily grind.

Treat creation like a muscle, exercise it regularly. The more you do, the healthier this aspect of yourself will be. Sure sometimes you will find what you made to be a “flop.” But as any good physical trainer would tell you, any movement is better than no movement. As it is with art.

This could be a great resolution for the New Year, to prioritize your inner artist. But I bet you, in no time you will see that once she is unleashed there is no locking her up again. And so begins your Creative Life, the one you were meant to live!
