3 lessons I learned from the flowers

Mother nature has a lot to say, if you just listen. Read on to hear what I heard from the flowers this year.

1.     There is power in numbers.

Flowers with other flower and plant friends just do better. The longer blooms and their roots are exposed to higher amounts of sunlight thus more likely they are to experience burning or dehydration as a result. Not to mention, this leaves them vulnerable to other elements like wind, rain and hungry critters.

What this means for us: We too can find safety and comfort in numbers. We are social creatures after all. You know the saying- people need people. Of course, just as overcrowding, or invasive plants can harm other plants, so too it can be with relationships. Surround yourself with other healthy strong individuals and you will also thrive, take it from the flowers.

2.     Continuous and steady watering produces more buds and healthier plants.

Southern California was hit with a significant amount of rain this year, but what seemed different was how steady the watering was in comparison to short lived big storm burst. In turn, the wildflowers went crazy! They bloomed longer, spread farther and even rarer more dormant species made a return.

What this means for us: Well for me, I tend to go hard on anything and then crash, even wellness. This year’s rains reminded me how much better we all do with smaller amounts of continuous self-care. Slow and steady watering if you will :).

3.     The bigger you bloom the more attention you will draw.

Take the sunflower for example. She sure dopes make a statement. I noticed that my children were drawn to these blooms, as were neighbors and myself included. Not to mention, she does so much good for the bees that gather her pollen, the birds that feast on her seeds, and the creatures that take shelter under her leaves. The bigger flowers draw more attention.

Depending on how you look at it, this can be good or bad thing. You may prefer to shine in subtler ways, like the pea flower for example. But if you have been wanting to make a statement, to be seen- listen to the sunflower. She stands tall, big and bright. In doing that more come to see what she has to offer.

The plants always are there to teach us lessons. To offer insight on life, nature is LIFE after all. I hope this served you and keep on blooming.
