Cultivating your own Creative Space

I get it, not every can or even wants to have a big old barn in their backyard reserved as a creative space. I feel very fortunate to have this little place reserved for me and my art, but it wasn’t always this way.

I’ve worked in spare bedrooms, garages, rented studios, my parents house, the kitchen table, and even under our staircase like Harry Potter. Sometimes we must MAKE space to MAKE the art! If I had to tell you a few things I consider musts do’s in any creative space it would be the following:

1. Define Your Purpose

Before you embark on revamping your space, consider the type of creativity you want to foster. Whether it's writing, painting, crafting, or coding, tailor your space to align with your specific creative pursuits. Knowing your purpose will direct your decisions in selecting the right elements for your creative haven.

2. Get Thrifty

Thrift stores, garage sales, and online marketplaces can be goldmines for affordable and unique items. Look for quirky furniture, vintage knick-knacks, or interesting fabrics that can add character to your space. Not only will you save money, but you'll also be contributing to a sustainable and eco-friendly approach to decorating.

3. DIY

Tap into your creative energy right from the get-go by incorporating do-it-yourself projects into your space. Repurpose old furniture, create handmade art pieces, or construct simple organizers using materials you already have. Not only does this add a personal touch to your space, but it also allows you to express your creativity in the process. *Fun fact- the art desk I used for 5 years was an old desk I refinished. Now my son uses it.

 4. Organize for Efficiency

A clutter-free space is a conducive environment for creativity. Invest time in organizing your supplies and optimizing your workspace for efficiency. Utilize budget-friendly storage solutions like repurposed containers, shelves, or hanging organizers to keep your creative tools within arm's reach. With that said, if you thrive in the chaos, let it be wild! This is all about forming an area that works best for you.

5. Set the Mood

Nature and beauty have a profound impact on our well-being and creativity. Incorporate natural or inspiring elements into your space that help create a calming atmosphere. Introduce plants, rocks, inspirational quotes, or work form your favorite artist! Not only will these elements add aesthetic appeal, but they'll also infuse your space with a sense of tranquility and inspiration.

6. Lighting Matters

Effective lighting can make or break a creative space. Optimize natural light during the day and invest in affordable and adjustable lighting options for the evening.

Creating a dedicated space that sparks inspiration doesn't have to be costly or time-consuming. Remember, it's not about the money you spend, but the love and thought you put into curating a space that fuels your imagination and drives your passion. Happy creating! 🎨✨
